The Brazilians had thought Ponder’s section of the trench was weak because of its complete lack of action. His section of the trench fought purely defensive, and was brutal in its fighting when attacked. Only after the Brazilians had shifted enough soliders to either side of his section of the trench in an attempt to break the Marines’ lines did Ponder make his move. His squad cut the Brazilian line, pushing past their trench, appearing to make a big push into the city so they could roll up the Brazilian flanks. Ponder’s squad took few prisoners before falling back, not losing a single Marine in the process. In an operation that took only fifteen minutes. Ponder had shaken up the four-mile battle lines.

His command raged at him for not pushing the attack and the Brazilians did exactly what anyone that had just had their pants pulled down would do: they filled the breach with more soldiers. In the next six hours, as Ponder was berated as a coward and not having enough brain to see an opportunity when one presented itself, the enemy stacked their reserves all along the line that had been so easily bypassed by Ponder.

After the Regiment commander and multiple company commanders had finally spent themselves on tearing him down and telling him that he would be stripped of his rank, he got his chance to speak. He spoke as they roared for him to shut up, though it was they who fell silent, it was they who learned Sergeant Ponder was already several steps ahead of all of them.

In only five minutes he explained why his raid had only gone so far. Everyone hung in utter silence as they learned that Ponder had set massive charges all over the Brazilian side of the lines. He had done it for a reason: he wanted them to stack their line with all of their reserves around that and the surrounding areas so they would be caught in the blast area and subsequent hail of debris.

He told them what they were going to do. A few Marines from each section of the line would be moved around like they usually were during at night, only they would all be stacked as if they were adjusting to the reserves of Brazilians. But they would in fact be ready for the explosion, ready to completely slash the defensive line that the trenches had been before starting to roll up both sides of it.

Within an hour of the massacre of Rio, as it became known as afterwards, the Marines had completely rolled up both side of the Brazilians lines. The city completely fell by nightfall and country didn’t last but two weeks longer. The massacre had completely demoralized the nation because they had been winning and in an instant, it was all done, the last independent country in the world fell.

That fall left only four super nation states: the Americas, led by the United States; the EU that also consisted of Russia
